Obituary: William A. Greene, 58, Manhattan, KS passed away Friday, October 20, 2006 in the St. Luke Hospital, Kansas City, KS.  He was born December 27, 1947 at Ottawa, KS, the son of LeRoy W. Greene and Mildred V. Bene Greene. He grew up in Ottawa where he attended the local schools and was a standout in the track and football programs.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen V. Shaw on August 3, 1968, in Queens, NY. She survives of the home.

Mr. Greene received his BS degree in Physical Education in 1969 from the University of Kansas, Lawrence and his MS degree in Educational Administration in 1978 from Kansas State University, Manhattan.

Mr. Greene spent over 35 years in the educational field. He began his career in Lawrence, KS, as graduate assistant with the KU Football program in 1969 and from 1970-1972 was a social studies instructor and assistant football coach at the Lawrence Central Junior High School.

In 1972, Mr. Greene moved to Manhattan High School to be in the classroom as an American History instructor (1972-1982); Physical Education instructor (1982-1996); Administrative Assistant/Assistant Athletic Director (1996-2000); Athletic Director (2000-2004); and an Associate Principal at the Riley County High School, Riley, KS (2005-present).

Away from the classroom, Mr. Green was an assistant track coach (1972-1974, 1981); assistant wrestling coach (1972-1974); assistant football coach 1972-1997); and head baseball coach (1988-1994). His 1992-1993 baseball team was the 6A State Champion.

His other activities included being the head baseball coach for the American Legion, Post #17 (1986-1991); Intramural director at Manhattan High School (1980-1988); and from 2004-2005 was a Group Supervisor for Job Readiness Training, Inc.  He was a member of the Fellowship Temple Church of God in Christ, Manhattan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant brother.  In addition to his wife, Mr. Greene in survived by two sons, Kelly L. Greene and Jeffrey J. Greene, both of Manhattan; a sister, Sharon Aldridge, Lawrence, KS; and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 27, 2006 in the College Avenue United Methodist Church, 1609 College Ave., Manhattan. Burial will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery, Manhattan.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Manhattan Community Foundation for Youth Programs, the American Heart Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
