Rex Allen Bowling was born January 23, 1947, at Ottawa, Kansas.  He was the son of Norman Glenn and Shirley Joan (Sellers) Bowling of Ottawa.  A lifelong resident, Rex made his home in Ottawa, Franklin County, Kansas until his death Sunday, October 24, 2004, at the age of fifty-seven years. 

Rex graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1965.  He also received law enforcement training through Kansas Sheriffs' Association.

Rex worked in law enforcement thirty years, serving seven terms in office (25 years) as Franklin County Sheriff.  He retired as Sheriff on January 1, 2001, and began work as an Assistant Funeral Director for Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa.

Rex served in the United States Air Force as an Air Traffic Controller from October 28, 1965, to July 2, 1969, attaining the rank of Sgt.  His tour of duty included serving in the Vietnam War.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Mt. Calvary Cemetery Board, and Community Corrections Board, all of Ottawa.  He was a member, and former President, of the Kansas Sheriffs' Association.

On April 17, 1971, Rex was united in marriage with Mary Beth Santarpia at Ottawa.  He had two sons, Blaine and Ryan Bowling.
